If your backyard boasts a vinyl fence, patio or railing, the smallest amount of dirt can make your backyard look old and demean the look. Luckily, vinyl is easy to clean and it does not require a lot of labor to clean, there are no special products or equipment needed just everyday items you probably already have in your home.
Below you will find some tips on how to keep your vinyl fencing and deck gleaming with pride.
Let’s start with the fence, since it’s probably bigger than the deck I usually like to get the big things done first. First of all in order to clear your fence of dirt simply hose your fence off first and wipe away the dirt with a cloth, try not to do this on a hot day so the fence does not dry so quickly; or go in sections. Remember to always use a soft cloth, never use a rough cloth.
Next grab some powered laundry detergent mixed with liquid household cleaning solution and water. The solution I use is 1/3 cup of power detergent and 2/3 cup of liquid solution to a gallon of water. The mixture creates a potent cleaning solution, and along with a soft cloth it will remove almost everything on your fence. If you have any mold or mildew, take another soft cloth and dampen it with laundry bleach and gently wipe the mold and mildew away.
After the fence is clean we now need to conquer the deck. Take a broom and wipe off any excess leaves or dirt on the deck. It’s easier to remove any furniture you may have or simply move it to one side at a time. An initial wash will a pressure washer might be needed but make sure you use a pressure washer with a psi below 1200. Remember you do not want to damage the deck, just clean off the majority of the harsh stuck on dirt.
If your deck is fairly new and you feel a pressure washer is not needed then start with a cleaning solution as above. But remember to wash your deck off several times as the solution above can be slippery if not properly washed off.
